About

BICSI is a professional association which serves 26,000 members in the information and communications technology (ICT) profession. With headquarters in Tampa, Florida, USA, BICSI membership spans nearly 100 countries.

The Challenge

The world-class BICSI Learning Academy has served thousands of individuals around the globe. To ensure they would be equipped to serve thousands more going into the future, substantial remodeling was required, including an overhaul of their network infrastructure. Configuration and technological enhancements were needed to create additional classroom space and improve the experience for students and staff. In addition, BICSI wanted its headquarters to be more sustainable and eco-friendly through more efficient use of thermal and electrical energy. Covering about 30,000 sq ft in total, the project was completed in two phases with the headquarters and training facilities handled separately.

The Solution

Optical fiber enhancements together with a distributed antenna system (DAS) enables robust WiFi to be delivered across the campus. Upgraded Power over Ethernet (PoE) CCTV strengthens site security for enhanced safety. Fully integrated 4K input/output design, wireless microphone and array microphone technology, any-to-any switching by room combine to create a seamless interactive learning experience. LED PoE lighting systems automatically adjust to ensure energy efficiency and optimal illumination. Temperature and humidity sensors were implemented to provide additional data from across the campus, enabling facilities managers to monitor different locations and identify trends about workspace conditions. CoreSync’s flexible, customizable platform enables additional sensors and devices to be added whenever requirements are identified. CoreSync Wireless Relays for plug load control were installed to reduce unnecessary electricity use by shutting off equipment when zero occupancy is detected. This custom feature was unique at the time and has become increasingly popular since. In total, 400 PoE fixtures and 300 CoreSync Gateways were used, the majority being used with 60W UPoE.

The Result

Modern, collaborative, and sustainable, the BICSI World Headquarters was successfully remodeled into a state-of-the-art facility consistent with its status as a global leader. The headquarters is now an intelligent building complete with new and redesigned technology infrastructure and complex systems. An array of centrally controlled devices and sensors work together to provide data, save energy, and maximize occupant comfort. Project Refresh Lead and Chief ICT Designer Ed Donelan, RCDD, NTS, ESS, commented: “BICSI’s standing as the authority on ICT education is backed by the support of industry leaders. “We are incredibly grateful for the generous contributions of our sponsors that have helped make Project Refresh a success.”
