About

Engineers Australia is the largest and most diverse body of engineers in Australia. As Australia’s principal engineering association they serve and represent around 100,000 professionals at every level, across all fields of practice. They are committed to advancing engineering and the professional development of their members.

Countless organisations, institutions and government agencies rely on their expertise to create, accredit and assess engineering programs and practitioners.

Engineers Australia offers a rich history of awards to highlight the dedication and accomplishments of engineers, with thousands of events each year.

The Challenge

Andrew Sinclair, National Manager for ICT in Engineers Australia, takes up the story: “We are keeping pace with the growing challenges of a modern organisation, by Implementing new technology and upgrading our nine offices across the country. These improvements could see our membership growing significantly.

“The problem was that, as a 100-year-old organisation, our IT infrastructure had not really kept pace with the growing demands of our staff and members. The tipping point was an outage shortly before I joined, when no one could access any of our systems.”

The Solution

Molex 6

As the new ICT National Manager, Sinclair masterminded the wholesale upgrade from old switching and, in some cases, handmade cabling, to an infrastructure that would support the body and its members in the 21st century.

Sinclair again: “Molex technology is being rolled out across every building. Currently (March 2020), it is installed in our newest office, which is in Brisbane, plus one of the two buildings in Sydney, and Canberra. Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne are up next.”

The Result

New infrastructure for a growing public body.

Andrew Sinclair summarises the benefits of the new system: “The whole infrastructure is obviously far more reliable and robust. We don’t foresee any more outages! It’s also futureproof, meaning that we can add new users – be they staff or members – really easily, as well as being able to integrate new technology as it is developed”.

“In addition, for our staff, it means that their experience in each of our buildings is the same. They use one swipe card in each; their logon is the same; and the software and applications they need to use are identical across our organisation. There are huge productivity gains in each of these benefits.”
