Biovitae is an antimicrobial LED lighting technology (UV free), that while emitting a natural white light, sanitizes surfaces and the environment from all existing bacteria and viruses. Based on tests carried out by the Scientific Department of the Celio Military Polyclinic in Rome and the military laboratories of Germany and Sweden, the multi-frequency peak of Biovitae killed 99.8% of SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with an action that – unlike UV light – causes irreversible damage to the structure of the exposed microorganisms.

Biovitae can be easily integrated into a Molex CoreSync smart building installation, providing occupants and managers with an extra layer of protection against harmful microbes.

Smart Building Technology

CoreSync and Power over Ethernet (PoE)

CoreSync, PoE and LED

LED lighting fixtures produces light using one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LED lighting offers significant benefits over older styles of lighting: typically these lights have a life of 50,000 hours, ten times that of a typical fluorescent tube. LED bulbs are 12% cheaper to operate than an energy efficient fluorescent bulb, and 74% cheaper than an incandescent bulb. LED lighting can be powered by Power over Ethernet (PoE), reducing or eliminating the need for high voltage mains current to be fitted in ceilings.

Another distinct advantage of LED lighting is the ability to tune the color (temperature) of the light . Different lighting temperatures suit different times of day and different types of work, and the ability to adjust the tone of lighting throughout the day creates more comfortable and productive working environments.

PoE (Power over Ethernet) uses an Ethernet cable to transmit both data and power along the same cable connection. The power supplied is sufficient to power many types of device, including light fixtures (luminaires), while the data connection enables the lights to be monitored and controlled from a central location or software platform.

PoE installation is normally more cost effective than traditional high voltage electrical work, and operating costs are lower over the lifetime of the system.

PoE is a proven, reliable and safe method of powering and controlling devices.

In addition to the PoE standards, such as IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8 (90W), it’s important to look at the standards that impact cabling systems to ensure your cabling design and implementation complies with both. Read more>>

PoE provides a number safety features that protect legacy equipment and users from the hazards of electrical power.

Signature detection – PoE voltages can only be applied to a cable once a device has been detected. This removes the threat to legacy devices.

Current limiting – The current drawn on each enabled port is continuously monitored and power is disconnected if it increases beyond the allowed limit. This limit can be set to correspond to the connected device’s power class for added protection.

Polarity protection – Regardless of the configuration and polarity of the voltage on the cable, power can be safely received. Badly-wired or incompatible equipment will either work safely or will not connect at all.

Automatic device disconnection – When the monitored current falls below a set level, devices can be automatically disconnected, returning the cable to its original unpowered state.

Low voltages –  The voltages used by PoE are high enough to be effective for a number of types of devices, but are low enough to be safe.

PoE Standards – A range of detailed PoE standards mitigate the risk of using different and incompatible local power supplies.

Biovitae - Protective Lighting

Biovitae’s antimicrobial action is enabled by patented technology that uses a combination of certain frequencies on the visible spectrum in a range that has been scientifically proven to be harmful to bacteria and other microorganisms (bacterial fungi, spores, mold).

Only light can penetrate biofilm bacteria and only these selected frequencies destroy the cells.

In contrast to other antimicrobial lighting technologies, Biovitae does not use UV-C, making it safe to use while humans and animals are present.

Highlights

Continuous sanitization is the most effective solution to prevent and contain microbial infections as it acts when the risk of contagion is highest: in the presence of humans that are both vectors and targets of viruses and bacteria. Biovitae sanitizes environments without sterilizing them. It is not harmful to humans and safely prevents the development of infectious disease strains without weakening the normal functions of our immune system.

The antimicrobial action is activated by the patented combination of frequencies within the visible (non-UV) spectrum range known as Sorèt band (400-420nm) which is scientifically proven to be harmful to viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms (fungi , spores, molds).  The Biovitae peak frequencies act on the molecular structure of microorganisms and causes microbiological damage that neither bacteria nor viruses can repair.

With bacteria, the main case of resistance is the biofilm that colonies grow inside. This film protects bacteria from disinfectants and antibiotics, but visible light is able to penetrate biofilms, and Biovitae’s patented frequencies are able to subsequently attack and destroy the bacteria inside.

Biovitae is a continuous sanitization LED system that operates safety in the presence of people. Chemical sanitization requires active human intervention with all its challenges (time, training, safety, scheduling). Over time chemical effectiveness degrades.

Traditionally antimicrobial light irradiation has been associated with the wavelengths of the ultraviolet (UV) light spectrum, with particular focus on UV-C radiation (240 and 260 nm).  UV-C has a number of drawbacks: direct exposure can cause eye injuries and burn-like skin reactions. Use of UV-C can generate ozone, which is an irritant, and over time can degrade materials such as polymers and textiles.  The use of UV-C therefore has to be carefully scheduled so that rooms are empty and sufficient time and ventilation is allowed for the ozone to dissipate.

Recent studies have shown that light at 405 nm, and the broader lengths in the 400-420 nm region, have the ability to inactivate a wide range of organisms, including antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains and viruses – without any harm to people or animals. This means that Biovitae’s white light sanitization can be safely used throughout the day while people are present.
