Nextsense and Molex have come together to jointly develop smart and connected Microbial Sanitizing Lighting solutions based on Nextsense’s patented Biovitae® technology and Molex’s CoreSync intelligent PoE building platform. 

Biovitae is an antimicrobial LED lighting technology (UV free), that while emitting a natural white light, sanitizes surfaces and the environment from all existing bacteria and viruses. Based on tests carried out by the Scientific Department of the Celio Military Polyclinic in Rome and the military laboratories of Germany and Sweden, the multi-frequency peak of Biovitae killed 99.8% of SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with an action that – unlike UV light – causes irreversible damage to the structure of the exposed microorganisms.

The CoreSync platform enables smart buildings, through a cost-effective backbone that integrates disparate building functions with standard building management systems – all while powering and controlling low-voltage devices and lighting. 

The ability to migrate lighting controls to IP-based infrastructure makes lighting a key IoT building asset that can be controlled synergistically along with other building functions. More integration also means more meaningful data being collected by a distributed sensor system as part of the lighting network infrastructure. Not only are the same occupancy sensors implemented for smart occupancy-based lighting automation, they can also be used to support real time office occupancy data. Data analytics will take care of running metrics and performance analysis on space optimization in terms of time savings and capacity to host the needs by room, department, floor and building.

An LED fixture produces light using one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and typically these lights have a life of 50,000 hours, ten times that of a typical fluorescent tube.

The LED technology in a fixture is based on a semiconductor that emits light when current flows through it. The current create electrons that then recombine with electron holes, releasing energy as photons.  The color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photons) is determined by the energy required for electrons to cross the band gap of the semiconductor. White light is obtained by using multiple semiconductors or a layer of light-emitting phosphor on the semiconductor device, allowing smart lights to be tuneable to selected wavelengths.

PoE lighting refers to the ability to use an Ethernet cable to power light fixtures (luminaires) and transmit data between the luminaire and the control software. PoE installation is normally more cost effective than traditional electrical work, plus operating costs are lower over its lifetime and data can inform further decisions to save costs: all without impacting the light quality for occupants.

The management of PoE is subject IEEE 802.3af/at/bt standards to ensure PoE technology is safe. PoE injectors and switches will not damage any equipment, even if the equipment is not designed for PoE applications. PoE blog

As an international agreed standard, PoE provides a number safety features that protects legacy equipment and users from the hazards of electrical power.

Signature detection – removes the threat to legacy devices by ensuring that PoE voltages can only be applied to the cable once a device has been detected.

Current limiting – the current drawn on each enabled port is continuously monitored and power is disconnected if it increases beyond the allowed limit. This limit can be set to correspond to the connected device’s power class for added protection.

Polarity protection – means it can safely receive power regardless of the configuration and polarity of the voltage on the cable. Badly-wired or incompatible equipment will either work safely or will not connect at all.

Automatic device disconnection – when the monitored current falls below a set level, or returning the cable to its original unpowered state.

Low voltages –  the voltage used by PoE (up to 57 volts) is high enough to be efficient, but low enough to be safe.

PoE Standards – mitigates the risk of using different and incompatible local power supplies.

Biovitae - Protective Lighting

The Biovitae antimicrobial action is enabled by a technological patent that uses a combination of certain frequencies on the visible spectrum (UV FREE) in a range that has been scientifically proven to be harmful to bacteria and other microorganisms (bacterial fungi, spores, mould).

Only light can penetrate biofilm bacteria and only these selected frequencies destroy the cells.


Continuous sanitization is the most effective solution to prevent and contain microbial infections as it acts when the risk of contagion is highest: in the presence of humans that are both vectors and targets of viruses and bacteria. Biovitae sanitizes environments without sterilizing them. It is not harmful to humans and safely prevents the development of infectious disease strains without weakening the normal functions of our immune system.

The antimicrobial action is activated by the patented combination of frequencies within the visible (non-UV) spectrum range known as Sorèt band (400-420nm) which is scientifically proven to be harmful to viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms (fungi , spores, molds).  The Biovitae peak frequencies act on the molecular structure of microorganisms and causes microbiological damage that neither bacteria nor viruses can repair.

With bacteria the main case of resistance is the BACTERIAL BIOFILM that colonies grow, exchange information and become resistant. This film protects bacteria from disinfectants and antibiotics, but only visible light is able to penetrate biofilm, and only Biovitae’s patented frequencies are able to destroy the bacteria inside and degrade them. The Biovitae light stimulates the porphyrins of the bacteria by activating an uncontrollable metabolic reaction. The endogenous porphyrins are excited and interact with oxygen, producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause oxidative damage to the cell membrane of the microbes and, therefore, their destruction by photodynamic inactivation.

Biovitae is a continuous sanitization LED system that operates safety in the presence of people. Chemical sanitization requires active human intervention with all its challenges (time, training, safety, scheduling). Over time chemical effectiveness degrades. 

Traditionally antimicrobial light irradiation has been associated with the wavelengths of the ultraviolet (UV) light spectrum, with particular focus on UV-C radiation (240 and 260 nm).  The key drawback to this process is that prolonged exposure to UV light can cause skin cancers.

In recent times the antimicrobial properties of the visible light spectrum have shown that light at 405 nm, and the broader lengths in the 400-420 nm region, have the ability to inactivate a wide range of organisms, including antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains and viruses.
